About the Artist: George Henry Hall (1825–1913)
George Henry Hall was a prominent nineteenth-century American painter whose career encompassed still life, figure painting, genre scenes, historical subjects, literary themes, and domestic interiors. He was regarded as one of the most respected still-life painters in mid-nineteenth-century America, while his broader body of work extended well beyond that genre. Swipe to see the original painting and close-up details that inspired the design.
Hall began exhibiting at the National Academy of Design in 1853 and was elected an Associate National Academician in 1863 and a full National Academician (N.A.) in 1868 — a significant professional distinction awarded by his peers in recognition of his contributions to American art.
His career was notably international. After traveling to Europe in 1849 with fellow American artist Eastman Johnson, Hall studied at the Düsseldorf Academy and later worked in Rome. Over the course of his life, he traveled repeatedly through Europe and also visited Spain, Egypt, and Palestine, experiences that broadened the range of subjects and settings appearing in his work.
Although Hall became especially celebrated for his richly observed paintings of fruit and flowers, he considered himself primarily a figure painter. Works such as Interior Scene reveal the broader narrative and domestic side of an artist whose career extended far beyond still life.
Hall’s work is represented today in major American museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Gallery of Art.
About Interior Scene
The designs in this collection are inspired by George Henry Hall’s oil-on-canvas painting Interior Scene, held in the collection of the Mayflower Descendants Museum. The museum was founded by American Tapestry’s creative director and founder, Cherie Behrens, who personally selects the historic works and objects that inspire American Tapestry and develops each design from details found within them.
Interior Scene offers a glimpse into Hall’s narrative approach to domestic life, with its furnishings, textiles, colors, and decorative details providing the visual foundation for this collection.
About American Tapestry
American Tapestry, founded by Cherie Behrens, is a heritage-driven lifestyle house inspired by historic American art and artifacts — often more than a century old — translated into handbags, travel accessories, home décor, jewelry, glassware, games, furniture, textiles, and more.
Every design is created by Cherie Behrens, drawing exclusively from the holdings of the Mayflower Descendants Museum, which she also founded.
Through these holdings, we follow the threads and stitches of America’s past — the unexpected connections among people, places, objects, and histories that together reveal an interwoven American tapestry. Our mission is simple: to bring historic American design, art, and artifacts forward into the present and into everyday life — making the invisible visible.
